Ladiga Trail

Location: 64 miles east of Birmingham, Alabama and 90 miles
west of Atlanta, Georgia.

Route: The trail runs west from the Alabama-Georgia border near
Cedartown, Georgia to Piedmont, Alabama. It then heads southwest to
Jacksonville and Weaver before ending in Anniston.

Length: 33 miles.

Surface: 22 miles of 10 ft. wide asphalt from Anniston to 4
miles east of Piedmont in Cleburne County. The remaining 11 miles of
trail is a rough gravel surface, the original rail bed. You can hike,
mountain bike or ride horses on the unpaved section. The unpaved
section is in the process of being paved.

Schedule: Right of way purchase began in 1990 and construction
in 1993. Completion is expected in 2002.

Welcome: Cyclists, skaters, runners, walkers, pets on leashes,
baby strollers, wheelchairs. Horses are welcome only in Cleburne
County.

Open: One hour before dawn till one hour after dusk, 365 days a
year.

The Chief Ladiga Trail is a partnership project between the cities
of Piedmont, Jacksonville, Weaver, and Anniston, and Calhoun and
Cleburne counties. Assistance has been provided by the Alabama
Environmental Council, Jacksonville State University, the East
Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission, and the
Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce. The project is funded by the
local governments, the Alabama Department of Transportation, the
Land and Water Conservation Fund, the Intermodal Surface
Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA)
of 1991 and the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century
(TEA-21).

Trail Safety and Etiquette

Trail is open to all non-motorized uses.

Stay on the trail surface.

Respect the privacy of adjacent land owners.

Travel in a consistent and predictable manner.

Keep right as you use the trail.
-
Pass on the left and give a courteous and audible signal of your
intention to pass.

Stop, look, and yield to traffic at crossings.
-
Clean up your litter.
-
Keep pets leashed and clean up after them.
-
No alcohol, drugs or firearms.
-
Cyclists and skaters should wear helmets.
-
Use the buddy system.
-
Use the trail only during daylight hours.
-
Walkers have the right of way.
-
Climbing on bridges and railing is prohibited.
-
Use extreme caution while crossing bridges.
